  1. Volunteering opportunities in Sri Lanka with Asha Trust – ashatrust.co.uk

Asha Trust has been established in Sri Lanka for over 10 years and works at community level to tackle the root causes of poverty and enable change in the communities they work in.

The Asha Community Centre is a unique and very special place in the community of Badowita, located in Mount Lavinia, a suburb of the capital Colombo. Opened in 2012, it was made possible by the generosity of people and organisations around the world, mainly those in the UK.

The successful volunteer will work the established team and focus on one of our key areas where we require support with development and planning. This will depend on the volunteer’s key skills, experience and interest and will be agreed on before arrival. Current areas where support is required include development of our Afterschool Club and Social Enterprise work, Communication/Marketing and Monitoring/Impact Evaluation.

The volunteer will work with the established local team and other stakeholders to establish where support is needed in the area they are working in, research and develop a plan and implement where appropriate.

This is a hands-on role and we expect the successful candidate to work closely with the team at community level, working to overcome any obstacles and ultimately to ensure the long-term success and sustainability of the organisation. You will also need to regularly report to the local Coordinator and Trustees in the UK advising on progress.
In return, you will have the support of a small but dedicated team, the opportunity to really make a difference and to gain experience in a developing country working at grass roots level.

This is voluntary position for 4 – 12 weeks, based in Sri Lanka, dates can be flexible.

    Our commitment to you:

    • Initial training
    • Program management and logistics as part of a highly supportive team.
    • Project related expenses in Sri Lanka
    • Support with finding appropriate accommodation
    • Unforgettable travel opportunity, experiencing the beauty of Sri Lanka its people and diverse activities
    • Make lifetime friendships

  6. I recently spent some time with a great little NGO in Southern India
who are looking for skilled volunteers with a couple of months or more to spare. There’s no fee – you just need to cover your expenses. Have a look at: http://www.save-intl.org/2015/10/

    Some more info:

  7. “ICS alumni have enthusiasm, grit and a global mindset all of which employers are looking for” – youth employability expert David Schindler.

Use or develop your language skills in a professional setting overseas in Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Palestine or Ghana this Autumn to transform your CV forever. By Christmas you could have led a team overseas, used your language in a business context, and developed a range of skills from communications to project management. The 12-week placement is fully-funded; your flights, vaccinations, food and accommodation are all paid for.

If your current plans don’t give you these opportunities, change them now. You must apply by Friday 10 July, and we’ll meet you on 13th July and you could be in-country by September.

“I could never afford an unpaid internship, so this fully-funded overseas development programme offers an equal opportunity and life-changing experience for anyone.” – Callum Northcote, ICS UK Team Leader 2015.

To be eligible, you must be 23 or older with experience of supporting a team, plus you must be a UK citizen or an EU citizen who has lived in the UK for a year with a current UK address.

    Greetings,

  12. Trip180 is a social enterprise that strives to make volunteer abroad experience affordable and accessible. We provide a global platform for non-profit organizations to directly offer their volunteer opportunities and eliminates the need for a middle man i.e. placement agency/tour operator. That means volunteers pay much less and non-profits get much more.

  13. Hi. Please could someone help. Would like to do free volunteer work without paying for it. Except air tickets. Please could you refer me to a site please. Regards Winsome

    • Hey Winsome. Where would you like to go and what are you hoping to do. That information may help narrow down your search.

    • Please keep in mind that to volunteer anywhere, someone is paying. I used to look for “free volunteering” until I ended up in the position of trying to find volunteers to help here in Ladakh. Unless and organization has enough support/funding/donations to cover the expense of a volunteer and the cost of the projects, volunteers need to pay. I had not seen it from this perspective before. Of course, there are also volunteer programs that have become big business and make it difficult for legit programs that need the little bit of finacial coverage from volunteers. Best of luck and thanks for wanting to serve others! Kelly Klein www:volunteerladakh.org

  14. Volunteer Ladakh is a non-profit organization run by fellow volunteers who work to meet the educational and environmental needs of Ladakh with the help of other volunteers who seek to share compassionately. English language instruction to young Buddhist monks and nuns, teacher training, access to books in schools, environmental education and sustainable environmental projects are a few of the many things we seek to support.

We need other like-mnded folks to volunteer in Ladakh, a magical place in the rainshadow of the Himalayas, high on the Tibetan Plateau. I came a year ago and found this to be home!

      • You are so right! It is an amazing place and the culture and values of the people are so reassuring and rewarding. We are in the middle of the Dalai Lama’s teachings right now, 150, 000 people present.

We need help with many things here: environmental education, start-up recycling programs, teaching English to young Buddhist monks and nuns, fundraising for books for schools, building classrooms (many schools do not have classrooms and children sit outside winter and summer!), and numerous other things. If anyone is interested in helping us, please check out http://www.volunteerladakh.org
Thanks for your work in spreading the word of compassionate action!

    • Hi Kelly, I had come across a few references for your website “volunteerladakh.org” and now this old post of yours. Is there any other way in which I could reach you since the website itself appears to be down since the past week that I have been trying. I am looking to put in a few months of work in Ladakh and it would be nice to find a place where I could be useful.
If this reaches you and if you still happen to be engaged in volunteering in Ladakh please do connect with me at marwahavineet@gmail.com
      Thanks
      Vineet

  15. Hi, do you have free volunteer opportunities in Hongkong that offer free accomodation for non-hongkong residents? I would appreciate any information you can share. Thank you very much.

  16. Volunteer in Peru! SKIP (Supporting Kids in Peru) is an international NGO registered as a US non profit and a UK charity. We work in an impoverished district of Trujillo, Peru. Our diverse team is comprised of teachers, social workers, psychologists, economic development workers and a range of other volunteers. We provide school fees, uniforms and materials to over 350 children each year. In addition, we provide lessons to reinforce what they are learning in school; reading comprehension, maths, English, art, sport and help with homework.

SKIP does not just provide direct educational support to children. Our team also work to educate and empower parents so they are able to take control of their lives and improve their own living circumstances. Through the Economic Development Team, we offer microfinance loans, group business training and are in the process of developing several small business ideas with groups of parents.

Social Work and Psychological support also helps parents to deal with difficult issues and gain better understanding for how to manage their children’s behaviour. This includes innovative projects where we involve the parents as teaching assistants in the educational groups we have for the children in primary.

If you are interested in volunteering, we’d love to hear from you! Send an email to volunteering@skipperu.org to request more information.

The Foundation offers a wide variety of possibilities for volunteers to help and put their skills into practice. It is a great way to get some practical experience with sustainable agriculture, yoga and meditation, building mud (adobe) houses, massage therapy, preparing Thai meals and more. • Could you please send me your email address. Or if you can send me some information about volunteering with your organization.

  19. A volunteering opportunity in Guatemala!

This is a great chance to be part of something new and to make a difference within Petén’s communities. Las Cruces and the villages surrounding it are seldom visited by tourists, giving volunteers the opportunity to truly integrate themselves with the local culture and make a great impression amongst those they help.

Volunteers will be working with the town hall, helping on community projects in Las Cruces and surrounding areas. You are likely to be working with the Women’s Office (Oficina Municipal de la Mujer), a department created to promote women’s rights, change discriminatory attitudes and provide the help needed to create a society in which there is gender equality. The specific work you will be doing will depend upon what projects will be running during the period you are volunteering. Should you have particular vocational skills or experience, you may be able to use these to great effect during your time here.

There is no fee to volunteer, and volunteers will just have to pay for their food and accommodation. Furthermore, as we are not an organisation, the volunteers won’t have to pay anything to us, but directly for the food and accommodation themselves (although we will help them find accommodation prior to their arrival).

Take a look at the website for more information!
