Pueblo a Pueblo – Guetamala

Hospitalito Atitlán is a small community hospital, serving a population of 40,000+ inhabitants (principally Tzutujil Maya), of Santiago Atitlán and surrounding towns, on the southern side of beautiful Lake Atitlán in the southern highlands of Guatemala. Re-opened only in April of 2005, after 15 years of being closed, it provides the only 24 hour emergency care within a distance of 2 or 3 hours (Sololá or Mazatenango). We also provide a wide range of services, such as outpatient clinics, surgeries, x ray + ultrasound, and onsite laboratory.

Volunteer needs:

Volunteer Coordinator URGENT – Spanish /English speaking Volunteer Coordinator needed. Housing provided and a stipend to cover living expenses. Work involves facilitating the experience of medical and non-medical volunteers.

Long term (min 6 months) URGENT – We urgently need a medical supervisor, family and emergency doctors, obstetricians, or residents and recent graduates, who can help teach and be a part of our team of locals and volunteers. We can offer housing and some financial assistance to cover basic costs. (good Spanish required)

Short term (min 1 month) – We need nurses, emergency or family doctors, obstetricians/gynecologists, anesthesiologists, pediatricians, internal doctors, residents and others, who can collaborate with other doctors in the ER, OR, and consultations as well as to share medical knowledge (basic Spanish required).

Short term (min. 1 week) – We are looking for specialists in different areas to perform “jornadas”, consultations or surgeries for specific problems related to your specialty.

Students and others (min 1 month) – We are also looking for students with clinical experience, health care professionals, and others with hospital experience to help us accomplish the many projects that require attention. (good Spanish required).
