Cofradia’s Bilingual School in San Pedro Sula, Honduras is looking for volunteer teachers. The school provides a high-quality, affordable bilingual education to the community of Cofradia that is not available through the local public school system. Thanks to a devoted team of internationally-recruited volunteers and locally recruited Honduran teachers, students at Cofradia’s Bilingual School receive more in-depth, expert instruction in all subject areas than would otherwise be available, as well as a unique global learning experience which both motivates and inspires. Students leave CBS with a good command of the English language which translates directly into higher-paying jobs, and increased opportunities for higher education.
In August of every year, a team of volunteer-teachers arrives in Cofradia to work until the end of the school year in June. These volunteers are responsible for teaching classes – English, Maths (lower grades only), science, art, P.E – , organizing school functions and fundraisers, and community outreach. All volunteer taught classes are conducted in English, so Spanish-language skills are not required. Similarly, while experience in education is undoubtedly beneficial, prior teaching experience is not required to work at CBS. We value more highly motivated, passionate, and hard-working people.
Volunteer accommodation is provided free of charge in a shared room in one of our volunteer houses. Travel to/from the school and lunch is provided on school days. You will need to pay for your travel to and from Cofradia (the nearest airport is San Pedro Sula and airport pickups are provided) and any travel insurance you need. You will also need enough money to cover your living and travel expenses during your time in Cofradia. Most volunteers spend a maximum of $100 per month while they are in Cofradia, plus any travelling that they do on weekends and holidays.
Honduras offers a wide variety of places for you to explore on weekends and during vacations from world class scuba diving and Mayan ruins to wildlife rich rainforests and lakes. Travel in Central America is inexpensive and previous volunteers have also explored nearby Guatemala, Nicaragua, Belize, and Costa Rica during vacations.
Make no mistake, working in Honduras is challenging for a variety of reasons. But in spite of these, or more likely because of these, our volunteers form meaningful, lasting relationships with each other, their students, and the members of the community they serve. They learn valuable life-skills that translate easily into their lives back home, and they are exposed to a program that is unwavering in its devotion to its mission and its students.
We are currently looking to recruit the volunteer team for the 2013/14 school year. We have 14 positions to fill ranging from kinder to 9th grade, and a special education specialist to provide additional support to students where required.
We also have several vacancies for the current school year, starting immediately and ending in June 2013. For further information and to apply please take a look at our website (www.cofradiaschool.com) and email volunteer@cofradiaschool.com.
