Volunteer as a Volcano Guide or with Las Tias -- Leon, Nicaragua

Hey everyone!

Just wanted to let you know about this volunteer opportunity in Leon, Nicaragua (they also have a branch in Guatemala).  Quetzaltrekkers is completely non-profit and run entirely by volunteers; the money made goes to Las Tias, their sister organization which seeks to lessen child labor by keeping kids in school, helping them succeed there, battling domestic violence and drug abuse, etc.

You can volunteer as a volcano guide (which is how they make the $ for Las Tias) or with L.T. as an educator/mentor to street kids in Leon.  They ask a $40 deposit, which is refunded at the end of two months (their minimal commitment).  I didn't get to do this myself, as I was already helping some missionaries down there and only stayed 5 weeks, but I met some guys at Lazybones hostel who were doing it.  You have to find your own accomodation, but it's inexpensive.

I'd encourage you to give it a try, I've heard nothing but good things about them!

this is their homepage...great organization. My wife and I hiked with them twice in Xela and they were great. They also bring a couple of the kids that they are helping along on every hike! I can only imagine they are a super bunch of people to work with.
