Birding, hiking, writing, art, photography – no matter where your interests lie, you will find many ways to spend your free time while volunteering at the Southwestern Research Station (SWRS).

SWRS is a field research station owned and operated by the American Museum of Natural History.  The volunteer program at SWRS provides an opportunity for those considering careers in the natural sciences, or naturalists, to gain experience by living and working in a community of scientists engaged in field research.

In exchange for 24 hours of work each week, volunteers receive free room/board, 3 meals a day, internet access, and laundry facilities.  Volunteers are typically housed in all-male or all-female dorms.  They assist with food preparation and kitchen cleaning, room and laboratory cleaning, etc.  Outdoors, volunteers may do landscaping, painting, or just help the maintenance supervisor with general work.

  1. Have been browsing through the list of placements to volunteer and this one caught my eye!, could you tell me a little more about this placement and give me an idea as it how much it would cost to apply for it?

  2. Zach,

There is no charge to volunteer at our Station. You should be able to commit to 6 weeks with us. If you go to our website above, you can fill out an application and find out more about us.

  3. By the way, this opportunity also caught my attention. I just don’t think I can commit to 6 weeks at this point.

  4. Yay!! I want to volunteer! Give me a place hee hee. x
