Intern – International Humanity Foundation

Posted by: International Humanity Foundation

Undertake a Volunteer Internship with Children in Thailand, Indonesia or Kenya

Currently studying? Gain an understanding of how grassroots organisations function through an Internship with the International Humanity Foundation!

The International Humanity Foundation (IHF) is seeking forward-thinking, dynamic students to contribute to our orphanage and education centers in Kenya, Thailand or Indonesia. IHF has grown over the past 25 years under the visionary leadership of Carol Sasaki (CEO) and the dedication of thousands of volunteers from around the world.

IHF is distinct from other NGO’s in this field as we practice the ‘Pass it on’ ethos in marginalized regions. We offer the privilege of education to those who without our organization could not reach it. IHF has no central headquarters, as each center is a product of its environment and follows the cultural code and norms of its host country. As a university student, your enthusiasm for education will be invaluable to our children and to our organization by encouraging them to constantly strive for a better future. IHF volunteers teach English, computer and math classes as well as maintaining relationships with local staff and the local population at every centre.

In addition to teaching, our organization’s volunteers engage in:
· Public relations
· Fundraising
· Legal
· Finance
· Project experts (i.e., Peace farm and food relief initiatives)
· Media

At the centers Interns divide their time between teaching and nurturing the children and working on international tasks. All volunteers participate on one or more of our international task teams such as university relations, media and fundraising. Before your arrival at the center, you must complete pre-trip tasks online to demonstrate your work ethic. Once at the center, IHF requires its interns to work eight hours a day on at-center and international tasks, six day a week. There is time to sightsee and tour the nation, but work is always the first priority.

Those who are secure without the comforts of home gain the most from this valuable opportunity. Although we are mainly seeking those with the above expertise, IHF is willing to consider those with transferrable skills if you can demonstrate them during our application process. Fluency in English, both written and spoken is essential.

Our internship program very much follows our mission of “educating the educated about the poor’. Through bringing university students to study at our centers for intensive learning experiences this allows students to go beyond the superficial in learning about the realities of poverty. This provides endless opportunities to learn intimately about the international issues of education, human rights, abuse and poverty as well as local issues such as tribal rights, land ownership, citizen status and tribal conflicts.

Pay: Upon acceptance you will be required to pay a non-refundable deposit of USD $75 which will be credited toward your weekly fee upon arrival. Once at the center, interns pay only USD $75 per week for the first four weeks, USD $55 per week for the fifth through twelfth weeks, and nothing from the thirteenth week on. These costs are to cover and room and board, both very simple.

Please take the time to familiarize yourself further with our organization – www.ihfonline.org. If you have any questions at this time, feel free to e-mail one of our helpful volunteers – volunteering@ihfonline.org

Volunteer in Nepal with pre school children!

There are many places in the world where a volunteer can make a difference and here in
Sauraha is one of them. Set deep in the tourist area of Chitwan in a small building on the side
of a guest house is home to a centre that plays a vital role in education of the poor.

Fig Nepal is the home to vast geographical differences from the Himalayas down to the flat lands of Chitwan. The former being hard to farm and the latter being easy hence many Nepalese have migrated to the flatlands of Chitwan near the Indian border. Many reasons for this include good farming land, easy access to working in India and the opening of tourism in the form of the Chitwan national park.

From just the past 60 or so years since the eradication of the Teste fly the population has raised sharply causing many social problems linked to poverty. But with the Western influence becoming more prevalent in the area Education is becoming seen as a means to escape poverty. So here in just a couple of rooms set between the hotels and the poor villages that have risen around the outskirts of the tourist area. Children under the age of 4 are invited from the poor villages to attend a preschool. Where they are taught basic reading, writing, good health life skills that prepare them for their future school life. So if you have the skills of teaching young children or a general interest in helping to mould the young minds of these children then we would like to invite you as a volunteer. Your duties will entail helping the children to read & write, basic health skills involving teeth brushing and regular hygiene and the ability to mix with other children in a constructive manner. But its not all work as the daycare centre is
next to the Chitwan National park where you will get the chance to safari on the back of elephants, watch the famous one horn rhinos and photograph crocodiles along the banks of Rapti river. So please if you volunteer here make a little time to wander the streets of Sauraha where there are as many Elephants as there are cars.

Description of Duties.- Most of your work will be based in the centre where everyday up to 20 children will come eagerly to play and enjoy themselves among friends. Here you will get the chance to help them with teaching social skills, reading and writing and Health skills for outside the school. Its gives all of these children, many who come from poor homes the
chance of understanding, at an early age the advantages of school and education. A vital part in the role of lifting generations of people out of the poverty trap.
Placement Location- Set deep in the South of Nepal about 20kms north of the Indian border is the district of Chitwan a flat sub tropical land where the main crop grown is rice. With much to offer, its also the home of the Chitwan National park that attracts people from all over the world to view the famous One Horned Rhino other exotic wildlife. Here in the tourist town of Sauraha set on the border of the park and next to the Rapti River is where our placement is located.

Volunteer opportunities in Morocco

Volunteering in Morocco will provide you the chance of a lifetime to explore this mystical country while giving back to the community. The Moroccan people are known for their gracious hospitality, their culinary delights, colorful markets, horse shows, acrobats and their delicious tangines and decadent sweets.

Our volunteer projects allow you to support the local children, at orphanages and primary schools, in nursery schools and teaching English to the woman and children of the community.

Our projects are located in Marrakesh, one of the Imperial cities and the capital of the south of Morocco. It is a city of immense beauty, low, red and tent like before a great shaft of the Atlas Mountains. As a historical and cultural crossroad, Marrakech offers a diverse mix of Berber, Oriental, and Spanish-Moorish artistic culture which is proudly displayed in the architecture and the decoration of the entire city. Marrakech comprises both an old fortified city, the Medina and an adjacent modern city. The largest traditional market can be found in Marrakesh and one of the busiest squares, the Djemaa el Fna. The square buzzes with acrobats, story-tellers, snake charmers by day; and by night the square turns into food stalls, becoming a huge open-air restaurant with busy life.

The people of Marrakesh are renowned for their warmth and sociability, their humor and directness. There is a greater openness too, with women enjoying a more public presence, often riding mopeds around on the streets. Even at its heart, Marrakesh feels more like a collection of villages than an urban center, with quarters formed and maintained by successive generations of migrants from the countryside.

Poverty is essentially a rural phenomenon in Morocco. Almost one in every four people living in rural areas is poor, compared to one in ten in urban areas. This brings many people to the large cities like Marrakesh in search of a better life and work. There is high unemployment and poverty in Marrakesh and our programs are focused on helping disadvantaged children and orphans and supporting education in the community.

Our programs in Morocco offer an unparalleled opportunity to discover one of the most enchanting lands of North Africa. Located on the Atlantic Coast, Morocco is an ethnically diverse country with a rich culture and civilization. Morocco has been a gateway to many people; Arabs, Romans, Moors, Jews, Vandals, Berbers and the Sub-Saharan Africans, all whom have left their imprint still visible the countries cities, towns, village and unique architecture.

Type of Placement- Working in an Orphanage

Description of Duties- Spend your days from the time you get up surrounded by children from the ages of 9 months to teenagers. Helping the house mum get them to be ready for school or cooking, cleaning, helping with homework and generally playing games with them. Everything you would expect to do for a younger brother or sister. But it’s not always hard work and expect to sit in the sun watching the children play or strolling to the park where they love to go. And if you feel real confident try teaching those English or any other subject that you’re good at. The main duty to perform here is to see that the children have a good time under your care as most have suffered in their young lives before coming to the orphanage.

Placement Location- Choose between Kathmandu, Pokhara, or Trussali orphanages. The Kathmandu one being in the centre of the valley with easy access to the entire modern city that Kathmandu has become. Pokhara being beside the Phewa Thal Lake a tourist area of distinct beauty or Trussali one of the best places to start your rafting & trekking from.

Accommodation- This will generally be a room in the orphanage itself where you truly get to experience the life and workings of the orphanage. You may have to share a room but this will be only if you are ok with it.  Standard Nepalese cooking will be provided and you will get to feel part of the family by living close with the children.
