Volunteer Opportunities in Ghana, Summer 2013 (fundraising required)

Ghana Health and Education Initiative, a nonprofit organization working in the Western Region of Ghana, provides innovative, self-paid internship and volunteer programs in international development. These programs offer participants the opportunity to develop and strengthen their skills in cross-cultural communication, project design and implementation, monitoring and evaluation, and community outreach. Participants will be immersed in a rural Ghanaian community and work alongside local staff members in support of GHEI’s health and education programming.

Summer 2013 Sessions:

Literacy Promotion Project [Internship] (June 1 – June 30, 2013)

The Literacy Promotion Project will pilot the expansion of GHEI’s Community Library programming to the rural community of Soroano. This literacy campaign aims to increase primary and junior high school students’ ability to employ literacy strategies and effectively engage with books through a school-based outreach. The outreach will culminate with the provision of books to the Soroano primary and junior high schools and literacy skill development in the school community.

This is an excellent opportunity for candidates seeking to gain international experience in community outreach, literacy skill development, project design and management, and monitoring and evaluation.

Rural Girls’ Health Project [Internship] (June 18 – July 4 2013)

The Rural Girls’ Health Project (RGHP) is a health campaign for female upper primary and early junior high school students from the rural community of Humjibre. Through school-based education on age-related health concerns, such as adolescent development, menstruation, and menstrual hygiene, the campaign aims to empower girls to participate fully in social and academic activities.

This is an excellent opportunity for candidates seeking to gain international experience in adolescent and reproductive health, survey writing and administration, project design and management, and data analysis and report writing.

Malaria Prevention: Community Health Evaluation (July 8 – July 24 2013)

In Ghana, malaria causes more deaths in children under 5 years than any other disease Sleeping under an insecticide treated bednet can reduce mortality from any cause by 15-30% in children under age 5. However, bednet usage rates are generally poor throughout sub-Saharan Africa.

In this session, volunteers will partner with a team of local community health workers to evaluate bednet usage and collect basic health indicators for the Humjibre community of over 4000 people. Volunteers will be responsible for ensuring the accuracy of data collected, as well as entering and managing the data. The process will provide volunteers with an incredible chance to be fully involved in the sights and sounds of the local community.

Girls’ Empowerment (July 26 – August 11 2013)

Empowering and educating girls are essential elements in the fight against poverty. Educating and empowering one girl has an effect on her family and community; if she is given the opportunity to pursue her education, she is more likely to earn a better income and have fewer, healthier children when she decides the time is right.

In this session, volunteers will work with local staff to develop girls’ leadership and life skills and teach them about health issues relevant to young women. This intensive 2-week session with local middle-school aged girls will give them the opportunity to think about their futures and themselves in a new and broader context.

Applicants from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Volunteer in Hanoi with Immigrant Children

Volunteer in the outskirts of Hanoi in the Kim Chung commune, Dong Anh district. The locality is in the process of urbanization, and as a result of the establishment of Thang Long Industrial Park, which leads to mass immigration from nearby rural provinces. Migrant workers accounted for more than half the total number of immigrants in Dong Anh district. Young workers with limited income are living in difficulty conditions. While we all know that children have rights to basic subsistence, education and so on for normal human development, many of the children here are facing with dificulty in education as their parents can not afford to send them to a standard school. Some even do not have money to pay school fees. Hence, these children can not access to the modern world. They lack not only fundamental knowledge but many other living skills, and English seems to be beyond their abilities.

With the purpose to help these disadvantaged children approach to supplement knowledge and skills needed for their future, Center for International Cooperation and Vietnam Talent Development (CVTD), in partnership with Kim Chung Commune People’s Committee (and Kim Chung Primary School), is implementing an educational program in a tranquil pagoda of Kim Chung Commune. The programme aims at providing the children with basic English lessons and other extra activities including drawing, music and physical activities in leisure time. The children have class 3 days per week, each class lasts for 2 to 2.5 hours per day.

WHY THE PROGRAM NEEDS YOU | Vì sao chương trình cần bạn.

International volunteers can bring the whole world to the community, allow students to gain new experiences and to express their feelings in a multicultural environment. By helping them improve
their English, we are giving them an indispensable tool for higher education. No one person can do everything, but we can all do something. We have on going needs for volunteers with different
culture backgrounds reflecting a rich diversity of a global community, all are united by their desire to help children.

This is a flexible program encouraging inputs from volunteers. Taking part in our program, volunteers will have opportunity to:

- Prepare the lesson plans including teaching aids, games, and activities… for each class.
- Give lessons and hold extra activities.
- Collaborate with teaching assistant to manage the class.
- Give feedback and recommendation about students’ performance

Volunteer in Peru with Cooperarperu

Hello,

We are a NGO located in beautiful Cusco Peru called COOPERARPERU. It supports the lovely children of the small impoverished community Tankarpata near Cusco. We also offer you an opportunity to volunteer in Peru.

20 minutes from the touristic world heritage city centre of Cusco the community Tankarpata is located without access to drinkable water, infrastructure, education, health-support and trade. Alcoholism and violence are the daily routine of the majority of the children living in this community. Infected by parasites from the water they drink, without awareness of personal hygiene and nutrition these children grow up in a surreal environment of countryside and garbage.

Cooperarperu offers these children education, health-care, hygiene, social skills, environmental awareness, creativity and many other fields. Many times the children do not know their date of birth so we organize birthday parties for all of them on elected days. We offer small travels to historic places and sports-events so that the children get to know their own culture and learn new skills.

Moreover we offer workshops for the mothers with themes like familiar violence, hygiene, family planification, to sell their handcrafts and psychological help.

We are 5 people working frequently on the project, 4 of us are volunteers and we work for 65 children from the age of 2-15.

Run by the national and international volunteers the project always struggled with the finances. To make it more sustainable we created la “Caja Magica”, a cheap hostel in Cusco, related to the project where travelers and volunteers can rent a cheap , nice bed, settle in a familiar atmosphere and support the project financially and directly with their ideas and skills. Volunteers should have a basic level of Spanish to communicate with the children and can include whatever skills they have.
