The children love to play and practice English with a few of the older boys showing real passion for football, Chelsea, Spain & Barcelona being the flavour of the day. Saturday is the day they have off school so this is the one day a week you will be worked the hardest.

A little about Nepal

Nepal has just reached the 30 million mark in terms of population with around 75 to 80% of those people living in rural areas. The main religion is Hinduism with Buddhism taking up the second largest percentage. The people of Nepal are some the warmest you will find so it’s very common to be invited to dinner or just to sip some sweet tea while listening to music and chat. Recent years have seen allot of unrest with the rise of the Maoists party, Now things have settled down but the people still don’t have allot of the basics that we in the western world take for granted. Schools are under supplied, hospitals lacking equipment and staff and farmers just growing enough to survive. These are the reasons why EHN is trying to put money directly into the area’s and people who need it most.

How EHN work

If you are interested in this placement, EHN charge £10 or $15 per day plus an £80 admin fee. A high percentage of the money goes directly to the orphanage to pay for food, rent and education equipment. Re remaining goes to EHN cover the cost of running the small office in Kathmandu plus support some projects where volunteers are not needed such as paying for school fees, medicines and water filters.

Volunteer in the Sauraha daycare centre – Nepal (fee)

There are many places in the world where a volunteer can make a difference and here in Sauraha is one of them. Set deep in the tourist area of Chitwan in a small building on the side of a guest house is home to a centre that plays a vital role in education of the poor.

Nepal is the home to vast geographical differences from the Himalayas down to the flat lands of Chitwan. The former being hard to farm and the latter being easy hence many Nepalese have migrated to the flatlands of Chitwan near the Indian border. Many reasons for this include good farming land, easy access to working in India and the opening of tourism in the form of the Chitwan national park.

From just the past 60 or so years since the eradication of the Teste fly the population has raised sharply causing many social problems linked to poverty.

But with the Western influence becoming more prevalent in the area Education is becoming seen as a means to escape poverty. So here in just a couple of rooms set between the hotels and the poor villages that have risen around the outskirts of the tourist area. Children under the age of 4 are invited from the poor villages to attend a preschool. Where they are taught basic reading & writing, good health &life skills that prepare them for their future school life. So if you have the skills of teaching young children or a general interest in helping to mould the youngminds of these children then we would like to invite you as a volunteer. But its not all work as the daycare centre is next to the Chitwan National park where you will get the chance to safari on the back of elephants, watch the famous one horn rhinos and photograph crocodiles along the banks of Rapti river. So please if you volunteer here make a little time to wander the streets of Sauraha where there are as many Elephants as there are cars.

Description of Duties.- Most of your work will be based in the centre where everyday up to 20 children will come eagerly to play and enjoy themselves among friends. Here you will get the chance to help them with teaching social skills, reading and writing and Health skills for outside the school. Its gives all of these children, many who come from poor homes the chance of understanding, at an early age the advantages of school and education. A vital part in the role of lifting generations of people out of the poverty trap.

Placement Location- Set deep in the South of Nepal about 20kms north of the Indian border is the district of Chitwan, a flat sub-tropical land where the main crop grown is rice. With much to offer, it’s also the home of the Chitwan National park that attracts people from all over the world to view the famous One Horned Rhino & other exotic wildlife. Here in the tourist town of Sauraha set on the border of the park and next to the Rapti River is where our placement is located.

We are looking for people to help look after the children he has provide a home for by helping with daily chores and homework and fun. If you want you have the option to help teach in the local Government school that Prem is the president of or work with his wife on some possible handy crafts they wish to make. If this is a success then we hope to teach the children an extra skill to help them in later life while making extra money to fund the children’s home, health and education.

Once you reach Kathmandu, Nepal (book your flight), the tourist bus takes about 7 hrs winding past the Trishuli River to reach Pokhara where Prem will meet you and take you to the village. The home is set in a valley off the Seti River with the Annapurna range of mountains in the distance for company. The home has 14 children in it 2 of which are Prem’s children and 2 are the house mother who is a 28yr old widow, the rest are children from single mother families too poor to keep them or orphans. You will also have a few of the local children popping to say hello so it can be a busy place at times.

Your duties will be to help get the children ready for school then take them, washing and cleaning plus helping to get the food ready. The position is full time but you will have time off during the day to use internet or do laundry. You are about a 30minute walk through the village, across the suspension bridge from Mahendrapool where you can find Internet connection plus places to eat if you want to break the dhal bhat diet.

We would like people how are happy to volunteer for a minimum of 1 month for this placement as it will give you and the children longer to bond and for your time to have a greater effect. Volunteer with Children at Social Risk in Chile

VE Global (VE) recruits, trains and organizes international volunteers to achieve our mission of fostering the positive development of children at social risk in Chile. VE has successfully integrated nearly 450 full-time volunteers from more than 35 countries into our network of 8 local children’s homes, community centers, schools and preschools in some of the most vulnerable areas of Santiago.

VE volunteers help implement our four educational programs: *¡Vamos a Leer!*, *Festival de Arte*, *Liga de Deportes* and *English in Motion*. Each volunteer is placed in one of our partner social service organizations where they mentor children in a variety of ways, from assisting with homework to playing games to creating and running their own workshops and activities. Volunteers build strong relationships with the children for whom they provide support, friendship and the chance to just have fun and be a kid.

Our volunteers also form part of the VE Global committees, helping in Programs by working to improve our educational programs, or assisting with Development through communications outreach and fundraising efforts. This gives volunteers the opportunity not only to grow and learn professionally at an international NGO, but also to have a sustainable impact on VE Global as an organization. Because of the delicate nature of working with children who have been abused or neglected, we require that our volunteers join our team for a minimum of four months, with a full-time commitment.

VE charges *NO* fee to volunteer.

See the application section on our website
