Safe Passage – Volunteer Guatemala

Organization: Safe Passage

Location: Antigua, Guatemala

Mission:

Safe Passage represents an effort to provide hundreds of children at the Guatemala City garbage dump with the skills, caring, support and supervision they need in order to lift themselves and their families from grinding poverty. We work to help these at-risk children stay in school and pursue their dreams of an education.

The areas in which we work are plagued by drug abuse and crime. For the many children who come to us each day, Safe Passage represents a refuge from the painful realities of a life marked by extreme poverty, abuse and neglect.

Volunteer Opportunities:

Whether working directly with the children at the project site in Guatemala City or assisting in our office in Antigua, you can make a tremendous difference in the lives of the children and families as a Safe Passage volunteer.

Working with the children: Volunteers are a necessary and important part of our program. Volunteers who work directly with the children help us provide the individual attention and caring they so desperately need.

The qualities and skills that volunteers teach the children are many; sense of self worth, sharing and taking time, speech and language, self image, social skills, I can do it, love, humor, peace, motivation, how to think and learn, communication, creativity, confidence, self help skills, pride, caring, respect, problem solving, joy of learning.

By sharing your time, energy and your talents with the children as a volunteer help us in our most important task of teaching the children that they are capable, important, cared about and loved.

Volunteers play an important role in our daily educational reinforcement and activity program.

As a volunteer you could work with local Guatemalan children to:

  • Plan and implement creative, fun, educational and art activities.
  • Supervise games and recreational activities.
  • Tutor children and assist with homework.
  • Serve as a classroom assistant to a local Guatemalan teacher.
  • Coach sports teams and plan athletic activities.

Office volunteer: As an office volunteer, you may assist with everything from data entry, record keeping, letter writing, answering emails and helping with the sponsorship program. Also, sometimes assisting on the computer using programs such as MS Word, Excel, and Access.

You can make a difference in the life of a child as a Safe Passage volunteer.
