My good friend Mark Schofield has found himself in a pretty bad situation. He went to Thailand to teach at an international school. He was in a scooter accident and is now in need of significant medical attention. While Mark believed he had medical coverage through his employer, his parents received an email from the school the day after the crash saying it will not be covering the medical bills.
As a traveller, this is one of those situations you dread. Not only are you banged up in a foreign hospital with no family around, you have to worry about the bill! A campaign to raise funds for mark has been set up on www.youcaring.com. Support has been incredible but I’m sure the bill will be pretty incredible as well. If you have the ability to contribute, any support would be greatly appreciated.
Here is the description of the incident on the youcaring.com:
“Mark arrived in Phuket, Thailand, in the middle of August to pursue his teaching career at an international school. It was always his dream to be able to teach in a tropical location. He was teaching English and Social Studies to Grade 7, 8, and 9 students.
As many of you are aware, our brother/husband/son/friend Mark was in a serious motor vehicle accident on Friday, September 6th in Phuket, Thailand. After being in a coma for several days, he finally awoke but is still heavily sedated. Mark suffered extensive injuries including a broken jaw, two broken arms, broken collarbone and shattered eye socket. He has already undergone several surgeries to help repair his physical well-being, but his brain suffered significant trauma as well. Consequently, the doctors removed a part of his skull to relieve pressure from the brain swelling. We are not yet aware of the extent of damage caused to his brain, but what we do know, is he will have a long road of recovery and rehabilitation ahead.
Reason We’re Asking for Support:
Unfortunately, Mark has minimal medical coverage through his workplace and visa. He has already undergone several expensive surgeries and we still do not know what the future has in store in terms of medical and rehabilitation costs. We have had many people ask how they could help out, so we have set up this fund to allow those who wish to support Mark the ability to do so. Any little bit that you can contribute will make a BIG difference.
For those of you who know him well, you can appreciate his perseverance, resilience and tenacity. We know Mark will make it through this difficult time, but he will need all of our support.
We thank you in advance,
The Schofield Family”
