Project Highlight:
The Foundation of Goodness is an NGO in Sri Lanka. It is committed to creating a sustainable rural community model designed to empower the less privileged rural communities. Our work is unique since it is of a holistic nature attending to all needs of the villagers and surrounding area including children’s needs, education and training, healthcare and mental health, housing projects, livelihoods development, sports, environmental management and sustainable development and womens needs. Project location: Seenigama, Sri Lanka (98km South of Colombo) Project start date: Ongoing Language preference: The ability to speak English is essential Experience required: We welcome all volunteers ranging from gap year students to skilled professionals. In particular we urgently need help from teachers, fundraisers and people in the medical profession. Qualification: Non-required although experience in one of our project areas would be highly desirable. Attributes / qualities required: Committed, passionate, self-starter who is able to work on own initiative. Period of volunteering opportunity: Any length Cost Involved: There is no cost to volunteering but we ask volunteers to pay for their own travel, accommodation and insurance etc. Accommodation details: Accommodation can be arranged in the village to suit a range different budgets (either in dormitory style accommodation, our villa or there is the option to stay with a family in the village). Meals if available and details: Meals are not included as standard but can be provided upon request. There are also cooking facilities in the dorimtory accommodation to allow volunteers to cater for themselves. Typical work/s for volunteer: Volunteers can add value in a huge variety of ways with teh opportunity to help with the following areas…
- Working with local children – helping teach in the pre-school, arranging events such as art competitions, drama and music.
- Teaching English
- Helping with the medical centre and mental health unit.
- Coaching sports including swimming, volleyball, cricket, netball and karate.
- Arranging sporting events.
- Setting up new businesses.
- Working on environmental projects.
- Training and developing our staff.
- Assisting with the Womens Enterprise and handicraft centre – training is offered to women in skills such as sewing and lacemaking and support is offered to help them generate income.
