Volunteer in Nepal for £10 a day

Posted by: Wayne Guttridge

Have you been planning to volunteer abroad this year but have been put off by the high cost of doing so? In many parts of the world this has become a big business which have reflected in such steep prices.

Why pay £1000`s to volunteer through a big international organization when you can go direct to the local NGO? This way all of the money goes to the country that needs it, very little is wasted in admin and you get the same experience at 25% of the price.

Volunteering in Nepal for just £10 per day which covers food and lodgings.
No deposit outside of Nepal.
All of the money being used in the country its needed in.

Volunteer to Teach in Myanmar! No program fee

Teach for Myanmar

Teach for Myanmar (TFM) provides a unique experience to be immersed in Myanmar supporting community-minded students. We match motivated volunteers with community organizations focused on education in Myanmar. Our volunteer teachers fill the vital role of sharing knowledge and skills to help young adult students reach their goals related to community development.

Our volunteers teach a range of classes, mostly Pre-Intermediate English classes focused on academic, listening and speaking classes. Other classes include Social Sciences, Environmental studies, and workshops in areas including art, dance, public speaking, research, grant writing, etc. Teachers are encouraged to share their interests and talents with prior approval. Our teachers spend 3 hours/ day up to 20 hours/ week in the classrooms.

Volunteers will be able to consult with the program staff in Yangon about logistical, social or academic issues that may arise. In addition to teaching and logistical support, volunteers receive some financial support to offset their expenses during their placement and support arranging an appropriate visa.

Volunteering with TFM requires pragmatism, patience, independence, initiative and a genuine respect for the host people and their culture.

Ideal candidates:

  • Speak English with native-fluency
  • Can commit for 10 weeks – 12 months, with some exceptions
  • Are flexible and hard working people with experience living in developing counties
  • Have teaching experience or strong academic backgrounds
  • Are aware and culturally sensitive to Myanmar’s traditions and ways of life

SLC Volunteer’s Story: Leonie from Germany

Leonie from GermanyI’m from Stuttgart, Germany. I’ve finished my studies at the university of education last summer (I am a professional teacher of English, Arts and German for kids between 10 and 16) and I was looking for a voluntary project somewhere around the globe, somehow one of my friends commented on a picture of a former volunteer at Slukat Learning Center (SLC) and I decided to have a closer look at the homepage which is really good. A lot of happy faces, kids as well as volunteers. The program offered me the possibilities to connect my two passions teaching and traveling…and Bali seemed to be a great destination to go to and it is great! Further the first contact with the manager was very positive and gave me the security to come here.

I’m going to be a teacher so my interrests in teaching have been there before and I also had some experience from diverse internships but moreover it’s a nice place to try out what I have learned about teaching at University. In total I stay 6 weeks in Bali, 5 are already over.

Slukat Learning Center – Volunteers’ Stories

Tara DevoyI hope to return in 2012 and I recommend this as an English teaching placement to any person wanting an extremely rewarding experience in their lives. So Slukat Learning Center might be a small drop in a big pool, of Not For Profit organizations. However there is a Zen saying “That a long journey always begins with the first step, and a great oak tree began as a humble seed.” and I believe that SLC is nurturing the children’s journey and cultivating greatness in them. So I would definitely recommend taking some time out and volunteering at SLC.

Sophie SchadMany questions turned in my head before organizing this journey. Is it the right moment? Will my kids share my enthusiasm for Indonesia? Are they ready for this kind of experience? What has changed in Bali since my last visit 14 years ago? But then friends, relatives and something in me kept telling “just do it”! We actually did it and we will never regret this time.

That’s what the spirit of Slukat Learning Center is about. You can achieve so much with energy, motivation, ideas and commitment.

When I recall the month we spent there, a whole series of pictures turn in my head.
