Volunteer in New York

Want to spend some of your New York vacation pitching in on volunteer projects that make a difference? From centrally located accommodations like The Sohotel on Manhattan which you can find on HostelBookers.com, you can set out to spend some quality time helping the locals recovery from nature’s fury or brighten someone’s day by feeding the homeless, providing coats for the needy, helping immigrants learn the language, cheering up the elderly or sharing your business knowledge with fledgling non-profit agencies. There are countless opportunities to volunteer in New York.

Refurbish the Green Spaces
Even before Hurricane Sandy ravaged the city, volunteers were helping “Green Up” NYC’s parks by planting trees, shrubs and native plants. Since the storm, efforts have shifted to clean up and replanting projects. To see what kind of park volunteer opportunities are offered during your visit, check the calendar on the NYC Parks website. In Jamaica Bay National Park, volunteers are being sought daily for repairs on the boardwalk that was shifted by tidal surges.

Girls Club Internship in rural India

The Girls Clubs are an opportunity for girls and young women in rural villages in northwest India between the age of 12 and 21 to enjoy new experiences, become more self-aware, gain confidence and develop skills that will help them throughout their life. Though some of the girls who attend the clubs are enrolled in school or college, but they are still limited in their daily activities by their gender. Even simple activities that allow them to get out of the home or express themselves are small steps toward the larger goal of empowerment.

The main goal of Girls Club is to build a space for girls, in which they can identify with and express themselves outside their homes. The aim of Girls Club is to facilitate new and interesting opportunities for the girls, provide them with new skills, develop and deliver awareness and information workshops and help to support them to identify and take steps towards achieving their dreams.

Furthermore, we aim to integrate the Girls Club’s with some of our other social projects. We have, for example, begun providing HIV/AIDS education in nearby secondary schools. Within the next year, we aim to expand the program to include a mentorship program (in which young Indian women work as mentors with the Girls Club) and to integrate the girls and women into the microfinance program by providing them with savings and credit assistance. Additionally, we want to expand this project to other locations in the area.

Extra skills required for the girls club project:
- Studies, experience or a strong motivation in working with women and gender related issues
- A dynamic, flexible, organized, creative, independent, strategic and dedicated work ethos
- Good communication skills
- The capacity to initiate and maintain a project with little resources
- Experience in teaching is a plus

If you are enthusiastic in working with us, please send the following information to hr@youngwomensidea.org
- Your cover letter including your motivations, fields of work interest, desired period of your internship (with start and finish dates) and expectations of the internship;
- A CV/resume including the contact information of a referee;
- A scanned copy of the page(s) of your national passport with ID details.

We will get in touch with you as soon as possible.

Start dates are flexible, however preference is given to applicants applying for more than 3 months.
