Program description
A large number of poor and disadvantaged children without homes are given refuge in orphanages and shelter homes being run by various non government organizations throughout the world.
These are distressed children who come from difficult circumstances that detach them from the joys of childhood. These orphans require love, care, affection warmth and education. Volunteers working in our ‘Help The Orphans’ program Kenya, Uganda ,Ruanda,Burudi Ethiopia ,Congo, Sudan and Malawi among other African countries  will provide support to the underprivileged and uncared for children to alleviate their suffering by helping them live a dignified life . We do this by supporting the work of local community organization in Kenya through the placement of international volunteers.
Orphans are deprived of many opportunities necessary for their development. Volunteers can help them fill this void in their lives by assisting the staff in the orphanage in organizing educational tours ,playing indoor and outdoor games ,teaching them English ,giving them basic computer knowledge and educate the young kids in a play way method. Volunteers can give tips to the kids about personal hygiene and help them in keeping their premises spic and span. They also help the children with their homework and prepare them for school.
Your little help can be of great significance for these children, helping to make their present secure and future promising. Spend time with them. Receive their warmth and affection. Tell them stories. Share their dreams. Working in an orphanage is a truly fulfilling and enriching experiences.http://www.kvcdp.org/children.php

Community Education and Healthcare in Chitwan,Nepal

We wanted to make you aware of some programs which we think are in the spirit of the True Travellers Society- namely meaningful, and with low volunteering fees.

FACE Nepal is an NGO run out of Patalahara in Chitwan in Nepal. FACE Nepal is run by a local (Nepali) advisory board, and supported by an International Board of Directors.

We are looking for volunteers to work together with our partners in the community (such as Village Development Committees, Women’s Associations) to work on projects where the volunteer’s knowledge is particularly useful to the community.

Our primary focus is education, and we are looking for individuals to teach  English in local Government schools, as well as in the community learning centres that FACE Nepal has helped the local community to build.

We would also be delighted to receive volunteers with medical experience to serve in community healthcare roles.

Full details of all of these. and other roles available, can be found on http://www.facenepal.org/personalvolunteer.php

We do charge Program Fees, however we believe these are reasonable, and cover the costs to the host family, the logistics of getting volunteers to thier placement, as well as a contribution to the running of the office.

For one month, the fees are $106 per week, for two months $71 per week, and for four months $55 per week. The reason for the reducing scale is the fact that we are charging for logistical costs for the volunteer, which will be the same whatever the duration and thus spread over more weeks.  Full fee information can be found at http://www.facenepal.org/registration.php

We are still a small organisation, and volunteers can help to make a major contribution both to our future development, and the development of communities in Chitwan.

I really hope people are interested, and if you are please visit www.facenepal.org where there is a lot more information- or just ask on here!!

If you want to discuss this via email, feel free to contact my personal address dplawrence37@gmail.com

Many thanks,

Daniel Lawrence

How volunteers are making a difference in Sri Lanka

The volunteer Sri Lanka Project has developed to the extent of being unrecognisable. It has the advantage of the superior accommodation as well as the proximity of the beach, and therefore attracts a huge number of volunteers.

The project now places volunteers in 2 orphanages, 4 schools, 2 nursery schools as well as a nursery school for street children, a male elder’s home, another elders home for men and women, the local hospital and the Nurses’ Training School. In addition occasional projects are undertaken with volunteer funding support such as building a new home for a poor family living in a shanty town dwelling that wasn’t weather proof and a pumped well with water tower for a poor family whose well dried up. There are also sports classes, art classes for elders as well as children and language classes for teenagers. At the NTS a small IT centre has been established for improving the nurses’ IT skills. This will be extended to the wider community when resources allow.

Local orphans spent their whole day penned in a corner of a room, without any toys and without adults to play with them until the project persuaded the orphanage staff to allow volunteers in. Now the children are taken outside into an area cleared by project volunteers where they play under a tree in the open air for a few hours. They play with sand, water, balls, ropes and other toys. It’s a whole lot better than sitting in your own pee crying all day.

All this is the result of the tremendous energy with which Janaka de Silva manages the volunteer placements and accommodation. He is supported by his extended family who seem to spend their entire day, every day, producing delicious food for the volunteers.

The latest development is the weekly evening dinner for the families of the street kids. Volunteers love to assist with this, as well as keeping company with the families. It’s good for the street families to be honoured in this way so that on Friday nights at least they feel as they matter.

Volunteers have the opportunity to affect the well being of whole sections of this area of Galle by following the ethos of this project.

This project shows how a gap year Sri Lanka and volunteer Sri Lanka can make a real difference.

Volunteer in Sri Lanka and make a real difference
