Volunteer in Uganda

Volunteer at Kitega Community Centre Uganda.
Kitega Community Center welcomes volunteers from around the world. The centre relies on volunteers to achieve its goals. Please see below for a list of projects that might interest you; opportunities include placements in our education, community outreach, building and infrastructure improvements, and health care programs. You are also welcome to suggest relevant projects that you wish to carry out.

General Requirements:

You will need to download our Volunteer Application Form if you have the printing and scanning equipments; alternatively, you can request a Word Application Form and send it back to us via email. (Please see the Volunteer Information section).

We require no formal qualifications; however, volunteers should be above 18 years old. Special consideration is given to individuals below 18 years old who are traveling with a team, group or family.

Volunteers should possess the following attributes:

1.A reputable background
2.An ability to work under minimal supervision
3.Creativity and motivation to implement projects that will benefit the community
4.Good communication skills
5.Ability to adapt to different cultures
6.Friendliness and a desire to make a difference in the lives of disadvantaged children and their communities

How volunteers can get involved:

Volunteers can get involved in many projects at Kitega; in addition volunteers can start up new projects at the centre. Possible projects include the following:

Education Initiatives:

Education is the key to success and for several years we have been empowering our community through education.

Volunteering in nearby schools:

We have partnered with rural schools in the area in order help them to provide quality education. Volunteers can work in the schools, helping to teach subjects such as English, math and science. Volunteers can also assist in our adult education programs, teaching basic reading and writing skills.

Teaching children with learning difficulties:

The community centre serves children with learning difficulties, and volunteers can help with their education and can assist the children with their arts and crafts activities.

Teaching Music and Dance:

Volunteers can also get involved by teaching the children music and dance.. At the centre we are in the process of creating a children’s choir, so this is a great opportunity for volunteers with a background in music and the performaning arts. Volunteers can also teach the children to play instruments such as piano and guitars.

Care Projects:

We believe that care is something that is not too small to give. The Care Projects involve the following activities:

Home Visits: Volunteers and staff visit families in need and get to know them better. This helps the centre to get to know the needs of the community, and it also creates a ray of hope for the families. Home visiting also involves distributing basic items to the families in need and befriending the local families.

Home-Based Care: This entails activities like cleaning the home and its surrounding and putting things in order at a particular homestead to ensure that they enjoy a good living standard. Through this activity, children with learning difficulties are monitored to assess their independence on performing certain tasks like washing, eating, etc.

Building Constructions:

Volunteers can engage in construction projects. These projects can include constructing a classroom block, houses for individuals in the community, latrines for homesteads to help improve health conditions, and a health facility.

NB: The construction projects are ideal for teams/groups and it is vital to gather the necessary donations and construction materials prior to volunteering.

Water projects:

Clean water is needed in the community

Water remains a problem in the community, and a water project is ideal for the communities we serve. Volunteers can help with the establishment of accessible and safe water for the community. In the area where we operate, the water table is not very far; in addition there are a number of water wells that need to be improved to provide safe water. This project is also ideal for teams/groups that can help to raise the necessary donations for the project. In addition it is vital for the teams to have water engineers and others who possess the necessary technical knowledge.

HIV/AIDS Awareness

HIV/AIDS remains a problem in Uganda. The majority of individuals in the community remain ignorant about the disease. Volunteers can help lead a campaign against this deadly disease, and this can be done through community outreach and sensitization.

Environmental Project:

The children are currently involved in teaching the community about the need to protect natural resources. We believe that the children can be effective messengers and role models for the community. Furthermore, their involvement will further prove to the community that disabled and orphaned children can make many positive contributions to the community. Volunteers can assist in planting trees and in cleaning-up projects.

Farming Project:

Agriculture is the main economic activity in Uganda; however, some families lack the knowledge and resources needed to support themselves effectively. Improving their agricultural skills and knowledge will greatly reduce poverty in the community.

Volunteers with a background in agriculture and animal husbandry can initiate projects to raise animals such as chicken and pigs; they can also teach better farming practices. Volunteers can also support Project Porridge by planting crops such as maize, which is later turned into flour to provide porridge and food for the children while they are at school.

Women Project:

Women are very vital in helping to fight poverty at the grass roots level. The mothers in the village want to ensure the best for their children and household. The women in the community operate a village community bank, which provides loans for women to start income-generation enterprises. It is ideal for volunteers who are interested in women’s emancipation to get involved in this project and to empower rural women.

Medical Project:

Volunteers can also help to provide medical services to the community. This is ideal for volunteers in the health fields, such as doctors and nurses. Volunteers can help out at local clinics and hospitals. Kitega Community Centre also welcomes doctors who have mobile medical equipments and who can work in the village directly.

Tumaini Miles of Smiles Center – Volunteer Kenya

TMSC was founded by Kenyan Christians who had the same calling and vision to give hope and to help the most underprivileged, deprived and vulnerable members of the society. Their hearts are especially drawn to orphans, widows and poor families.  Tumaini is located in the rural western province of Kenya in the Malava division, Kakamega District.

Kakamega, Kenya is one of the communities that has no access to many things, including modernized development and educational projects that are offered by large organizations. There is little to no hope in the lives of many, especially orphans and children from poor families as most of them have no access to basic education and healthcare facilities.

This reality has increased the level of poverty, hopelessness and ignorance in the community. Tumaini has a desire to provide for the physical, emotional and intellectual needs of each child and woman and of general community. Above all, Tumaini wishes to give them hope in the Lord Jesus Christ.
