Volunteer and Promote Literacy in Bolivia with Biblioworks

VOLUNTEERS WELCOME!

BiblioWorks builds libraries, trains libraries, and supplies books in poor rural communities in and around Sucre, Bolivia. Volunteers can work in our office in Sucre, where the role includes accounting, budgeting, grant writing, administration, and more. Or, volunteers can encourage and promote reading and library use in one of the nine BiblioWorks libraries.

Unlike many non-profit organizations, BiblioWorks does not charge any money to volunteer. However, you will need to cover your transportation, food and lodging costs. We are happy to help you find your own low-cost accommodation. Bolivia is generally an incredibly inexpensive country.

We also require a time commitment of at least one month. For more information please contact us at volunteerbiblioworks(at)gmail.com.

Volunteering opportunities with children in La paz, Bolivia

We invite you to find out about our volunteer opportunities! Since 1995, Para Los Niños has worked with children and young adults who are wards of the State due to abandonment, abuse and neglect. We work in coordination with Social Services Department in 12 state run homes and institutions which house children from birth to 18 years of age, orphans and abandoned children, young offenders, victims of violence, sexual traffic, domestic abuse, and intellectually and physically disabled children. These state homes are understaffed and poorly funded. PLN aims to support them with activities and projects which are adapted to meet the development, educational and health needs of the children, youths and young adults.

Volunteers are vital to operation of our programs. They run extracurricular development focused activities, stimulative therapy (for children with disabilities) or work in the the office. Our posts are quite flexible and require no money to participate. To find out more please visit the volunteer pages on our website: www.boliviaparalosninos.org

Fundación Luz del Mundo – Bolivia

Luz del Mundo
Luz del Mundo is a home/child minding centre in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, run by Gabriela Rojas Llave. Local children attend and are offered English classes as well as other extra curricular activities such as theatre, music and cultural studies. There is no cultural centre in Santa Cruz and the aim of these classes is to provide the children with a rich knowledge of their culture and enable them to demonstrate what they learn to others through performance.

Gabriela, the director provides them with lunch and all of their learning materials, birthday and Christmas parties/presents, haircuts as well as encouragement and the loving support that they need.

Inti Wara Yassi – Volunteer Bolivia

Submitted by a True Travellers Society member:

http://www.intiwarayassi.org/

Inti Wara Yassi provides a unique opportunity to become intimately
involved in the care and rehabilitation of animals indigenous to the
region, including monkeys, large cats, parrots and other small jungle
creatures. The animals brought to the park generally have been
captured and sold illegally through the black market animal trade, and
have been either confiscated or given up by their owners. A minimum
stay of two weeks is required, but volunteers are encouraged to commit
to longer stays for the benefit of the animals. A small fee is
required of volunteers per month, which covers housing costs and
subsidizes the care of the animals.

There are two locations, the more commonly visited of which is the one
at Parque Machia, located in Villa Tunari between Cochabamba and Santa
Cruz (make sure you take a bus following the correct route which
passes by the park, as not all do). A newer section, Nueva Tiera, has
been opened to deal with overflow as the program expands, offering
more primitive living conditions than the original park. This is
located north of Santa Cruz.

I have personally spent 9 months at this park, and know many other
volunteers who have stayed even longer. Costs are reasonable (see the
website for details), and as long as your booze intake is minimal,
stationary life can really help in stretching out traveling expenses.
I highly recommend this experience, and suggest that one plan for a
minimum of one month stay to truly connect with the animals and
people.
