Teach English in Peru!

The Organization

Horizon Peru is a non-profit organization in Trujillo, Peru. The mission of Horizon Peru is to educate disadvantaged individuals in English and extra-curricular activities such as music, arts, gardening and sports in order to provide the community with equal opportunity and empowerment.
Horizon Peru is based in the community of La Esperanza, just outside the centre of Trujillo. La Esperanza is known as Pueblo Joven in Spanish, which translates into shantytown emphasizing the area as underdeveloped. There are few paved roads and many people live without running water, electricity, or other amenities.

The School

We teach classes out of the Horizon Volunteer House and at the local public school. At Horizon, there are 1-4 students per class and the age of the students range from 6-55 years old. The public school classes average about 30 students per class ages 5-12. Volunteers teach solo at the Horizon Volunteer House and in in pairs at the public school. Volunteers are responsible for up to 5 hours of class instruction each day or approximately 25 hours per week. Classes are 1 hour and working hours are from 8am-7pm. There is no work on the weekend.
There is a curriculum available to guide you through your classes for each level. You will also receive training and observation time when you arrive, before you begin teaching. Previous teaching experience is not required, however, volunteers must be fluent in English. At Horizon, you will have the opportunity to develop your own teaching style and learn by experience how to conduct a class Spanish is not required, but volunteers will have the opportunity to learn the language through interacting with the local community and optional Spanish lessons.

Accommodation

All volunteer stay at the Horizon Volunteer House with fellow volunteers and staff. Staying at the Horizon Volunteer house allows you to build friendships with other volunteers from around the world, form connections with the friendly locals, and improve your Spanish skills. Volunteers stay in shared bedrooms and have access to a shared washroom that has hot water. Other amenities include a kitchen, internet/wifi, and a balcony.

Activities outside Volunteering

Volunteers will have the opportunity to go deeper into the city of Trujillo and explore popular tourist destinations nearby. If you’re interested, we can also arrange for Spanish lessons, dance lessons, Peruvian cooking lessons, and surfing and sand boarding! For all these activities we have agreements with local institutions, which offer discounts just for our volunteers.

Contribution Fee

The contribution fee goes towards accommodation costs, maintaining the house, school supplies, programs and events for the students. Because students do not pay for their classes, this fee is crucial for maintaining our program. A little money from our volunteers goes a long way in La Esperanza.
Please visit our website at www.horizonperu.com to see a complete breakdown on the contribution fees.

Free Volunteering in Cusco

The school of Aldea Yanapay is one of those rare exceptions where words like love and peace are lived out every day. Aldea Yanapay offers free volunteering in Cusco and works to alleviate the social injustices faced by the children of Cusco. The school provides a haven of love, creativity, and learning for the youth of the city.

Students come to our after-school program from various public and private schools. In the Aldea they complete their homework, use the library and its materials, and also receive an arts-based education (theatre, music, painting, etc.) and other courses which are important in everyday life: world cultures and religions, ecology, sexual education, reading. The school is open to all forms of cultural expression, such as meditation, massage, capoeira, circus, etc. As a result, people come from all over the world, everyone with something to give.

One of our goals is self sufficiency and for that reason we founded the Cafe Restaurant Yanapay. This is a place with international food, art, couches, and occasional theatre or live music. All of the money from the restaurant goes to sustain our social projects.

We also operate a hostal (Hostal Magico) in Cusco, in which all profits fund our social projects.

Unlike many other volunteer projects, there is NO FEE to volunteer with Aldea Yanapay. We greet volunteers for any amount of time- a day or a year. If you have a skill to share or a class to teach, or you want to stay for a long time and help with future projects, please join us.

Volunteer in Paraguay – Para La Tierra

Paraguay remains one of the least visited countries in South America yet is also amongst the most friendly, safe and traditional. Paraguay is perfect for an adventurer ready to explore a different world off the beaten track.Para La Tierra operates from Reserva Natural Laguna Blanca, a beautiful location in the east of Paraguay, boasting a clear freshwater lake ready for swimming in, and a sandy beach for you to relax on at the end of the day. Laguna Blanca lies on the border of the Paraguayan Cerrado and the Atlantic Forest, two globally endangered habitats in desperate need of protection. You will be able to explore both of these areas and see some of the biodiversity that Paraguay has to offer such as the maned-wolf, jaguar, capuchin monkey, brock deer, burrowing owl and armadillo. Perhaps the most important species of all is the White-winged Nightjar which is found to breed near Laguna Blanca and in only two other locations in the world! It is of critical importance that we study this bird’s life cycle, habitat and behaviour in order to ensure its survival.

Para La Tierra volunteers can join in any one of our many projects. Perhaps you would like to learn about the species of Laguna Blanca, gain some research experience or just explore what the reserve has to offer. Alternatively if you are feeling strong, you could join in with the Forest Guards patroling and maintaining the trails. Maybe you want to practice your Spanish and help with some of our outreach activities. With lots of options you can try a bit of everything and see what it’s like to be a part of a conservation organisation.

Volunteer with Children at Social Risk in Chile

VE Global (VE) recruits, trains and organizes international volunteers to achieve our mission of fostering the positive development of children at social risk in Chile. VE has successfully integrated nearly 450 full-time volunteers from more than 35 countries into our network of 8 local children’s homes, community centers, schools and preschools in some of the most vulnerable areas of Santiago.

VE volunteers help implement our four educational programs: *¡Vamos a Leer!*, *Festival de Arte*, *Liga de Deportes* and *English in Motion*. Each volunteer is placed in one of our partner social service organizations where they mentor children in a variety of ways, from assisting with homework to playing games to creating and running their own workshops and activities. Volunteers build strong relationships with the children for whom they provide support, friendship and the chance to just have fun and be a kid.

Our volunteers also form part of the VE Global committees, helping in Programs by working to improve our educational programs, or assisting with Development through communications outreach and fundraising efforts. This gives volunteers the opportunity not only to grow and learn professionally at an international NGO, but also to have a sustainable impact on VE Global as an organization. Because of the delicate nature of working with children who have been abused or neglected, we require that our volunteers join our team for a minimum of four months, with a full-time commitment.

VE charges *NO* fee to volunteer.

See the application section on our website
http://www.ve-global.org/online-application/ for more details. Or contact info@ve-global.org to learn more about volunteering with us.

Volunteer in Peru with Cooperarperu

Hello,

We are a NGO located in beautiful Cusco Peru called COOPERARPERU. It supports the lovely children of the small impoverished community Tankarpata near Cusco. We also offer you an opportunity to volunteer in Peru.

20 minutes from the touristic world heritage city centre of Cusco the community Tankarpata is located without access to drinkable water, infrastructure, education, health-support and trade. Alcoholism and violence are the daily routine of the majority of the children living in this community. Infected by parasites from the water they drink, without awareness of personal hygiene and nutrition these children grow up in a surreal environment of countryside and garbage.

Cooperarperu offers these children education, health-care, hygiene, social skills, environmental awareness, creativity and many other fields. Many times the children do not know their date of birth so we organize birthday parties for all of them on elected days. We offer small travels to historic places and sports-events so that the children get to know their own culture and learn new skills.

Moreover we offer workshops for the mothers with themes like familiar violence, hygiene, family planification, to sell their handcrafts and psychological help.

We are 5 people working frequently on the project, 4 of us are volunteers and we work for 65 children from the age of 2-15.

Run by the national and international volunteers the project always struggled with the finances. To make it more sustainable we created la “Caja Magica”, a cheap hostel in Cusco, related to the project where travelers and volunteers can rent a cheap , nice bed, settle in a familiar atmosphere and support the project financially and directly with their ideas and skills. Volunteers should have a basic level of Spanish to communicate with the children and can include whatever skills they have.
