La Tortuga Feliz – Costa Rica

I recently finished volunteering for 3 months with a non profit protecting sea turtles in costa rica and I really want to spread the word. Working with La Tortuga Feliz was definitely one of the most rewarding experience of my life. My daily activities included beach patrolling and hatchery work. Living conditions were basic as expected, however, the amazing food was a welcome surprise. The rewards not only consisted of the opportunity to bond with a diverse group of people but also to actively participate in an organisation that truly helps both the marine wildlife and the local community. If anyone is interested in CHEAP voluntary work in central/south America, I couldn’t recommend LTF more.

Volunteer opportunities in the Dominican Republic

Supporting Guasa is a charity organisation which works to help alleviate poverty in the Dominican village of Ramón Santana, also known as Guasa (Wa-sah). All our work is based on the principle that education is the root to a better future.

We have several opportunities which you can read about on our website including year round English school based teaching, an English summer school as well as a girl’s project. These are described under the “project” tab on the website.

The organisation covers volunteer accomodation and food in a host family but all other costs are covered by the volunteer, including leisure costs.

Volunteer Teachers Required at Cofradia’s Bilingual School

Cofradia’s Bilingual School in San Pedro Sula, Honduras is looking for volunteer teachers. The school provides a high-quality, affordable bilingual education to the community of Cofradia that is not available through the local public school system. Thanks to a devoted team of internationally-recruited volunteers and locally recruited Honduran teachers, students at Cofradia’s Bilingual School receive more in-depth, expert instruction in all subject areas than would otherwise be available, as well as a unique global learning experience which both motivates and inspires. Students leave CBS with a good command of the English language which translates directly into higher-paying jobs, and increased opportunities for higher education.

In August of every year, a team of volunteer-teachers arrives in Cofradia to work until the end of the school year in June. These volunteers are responsible for teaching classes – English, Maths (lower grades only), science, art, P.E – , organizing school functions and fundraisers, and community outreach. All volunteer taught classes are conducted in English, so Spanish-language skills are not required. Similarly, while experience in education is undoubtedly beneficial, prior teaching experience is not required to work at CBS. We value more highly motivated, passionate, and hard-working people.

Community-based Hawksbill Conservation Projects in Central America

Period
The project runs from April 15th to September 15th, 2012.

Location
The project takes place in two different locations: Natural Reserve Estero Padre Ramos, Nicaragua, and Biosphere Reserve Jiquilisco Bay, El Salvador.

Background Information
We strongly believe that communities are fundamental to long-term sea turtle conservation efforts. By working closely with local community members that depend on turtles for their livelihoods, we harness their vast knowledge of these creatures and thus maximize conservation efforts. Most threats to hawksbills are related to human activities and by working with these stakeholders to actively generate socio-economic alternatives we convert former turtle “poachers” in turtle heroes, while providing direly needed economic benefits to families in need.

The volunteer program was also initiated to extend the unique opportunity to participate in our work to the public, while also moving the program towards financial sustainability. Volunteers are critical to the success of the project, serving as personnel to ensure improved conservation efforts, while also generating funding essential to local community members and the project.
Volunteer contributions also assist in building a sense of local pride and increasing awareness, demonstrating the importance and benefits of protecting hawksbills and marine resources in general. Aside from working directly with the turtles, volunteers also have opportunities to get involved in other local ecological and social issues, providing unique cultural and educational experiences for both volunteers and locals alike.
