Photos from Ladakh: Hockey and Skating

Here are some more photos from Ladakh, but they aren't from me. Jared Henderson, from Boston, was volunteering at SECMOL coaching hockey for about three weeks. He did an amazing job with the kids and exhibited some incredible dedication. Every morning at 7am I could hear him providing direction out on the ice. He was pretty much on the ice all day sharing hockey and skating tips. Jared was able to do this in a way that really connected with the kids which was nice to see. I enjoy his … [Read more...]

The Hockey Equipment Arrived in India!

I'm not going to say that it was smooth sailing, but all of the donated equipment arrived in India! Nothing had been damaged or disappeared. It was a journey that saw the equipment collected across Saskatchewan (and Prince Edward Island), packed in Regina and shipped via air to New Delhi, India. In Delhi, the equipment must have needed a rest as it was stuck in customs for a couple weeks. On January 12th, the equipment was flown from Delhi to Leh and delivered to the SECMOL campus. … [Read more...]

Skating on the Indus River

On our second day at the SECMOL campus, a couple of the students asked if I would go to their practice the following morning to help them out. The Lalok region under-20 team was entered in a tournament in Leh which started in two days. I agreed to go help them out. They said they would give me a ride out to the practice which started at 10:30. The practice was to be held on a rink on the Indus River (I can't remember the name of the rink). They told me it was about a 15 minute drive to the … [Read more...]

Back in Canada

I'm back in Canada after a great trip to India. Our Hockey in the Himalayas project was very successful. Over the next few weeks we will be sharing stories, photos and a great video of our adventures on our site. Be sure to tune in. Thanks again to everyone who supported us and enabled us to make this project happen. Here are a … [Read more...]

Fundraising Recap for Hockey in the Himalayas

I'm really happy with how our fundraising went for the Hockey in the Himalayas campaign. It took the entire month to reach our goal, but thanks to O'hanlons Irish Pub in Regina and generous donations from Alexander Keith's, Molson Coors Canada, Big Rock and a number of guests at the fundraiser, we were able to surpass it! I never considered our goal or project as overwhelming until I was asked on the CTV Live Morning show "why did you take on such an ambitious target?" I still don't know … [Read more...]

Last day of Fundraising

The last day of fundraising started early, which was a bit of a stretch for me as I've been battling a cold for over a week. The Morning Show at Global Regina covered our story which was fantastic even if it meant a 5:30 am start time. Your browser does not support frames. Incredible Generosity from Saskatchewan

I finally finished sorting through the majority of equipment that has been donated. Check this out. One more favour though, still need to collect a bit more to ship it there. We are currently at $3380 with a few days left to donate. If you are interested, you can donate online. Thanks again, the amount of equipment that has come in is fantastic. … [Read more...]

Hockey update – 7 days left

We are closing in on the end of our equipment and fundraising drive and the support that we have received has been fantastic. The equipment has really been flowing in and we have a lot of gear to ship to India. The following photo shows less than half of what has been donated (apparently, we need a bigger basement): … [Read more...]

10 Days into Fundraising Efforts

Well, our first 10 days of fundraising for Hockey in the Himalayas have come to a close and things are really picking up. Donated to date: - $1205 - 6 bags of equipment In the Media When I was planning this fundraiser, I was counting on social media to spread the word about our project. I haven't done a fundraising project like this before and it is always a bit nerve racking to rely on the merit of a new project to carry itself. But, so far the results have been fantastic. Thanks to … [Read more...]

Finding a Volunteer Program

In my last post, I identified that the first volunteer project of Wandering Wahba is to "get some hockey equipment together and take it to the Himalayas to play pond hockey with the locals". I thought it would be useful if I took you through how I arrived at this opportunity. Selecting a Volunteer Travel Opportunity With a quick search, you can find a number of volunteer travel resources including Volunteer Forever, Global Help Swap, and Volunteer South America. Hockey in the Himalayas – SECMOL, India

Hockey in the Himalayas is the first project of Wandering Wahba - Truly Travelling. The seed for this idea was planted a couple years ago when a friend of mine, James Turner, returned from a year gallivanting the globe with his wife. Part of their journey took them to the Himalayas in India where he coached hockey and she coached figure skating. This wasn't what I had in my head of a typical visit to India, but I thought it sounded fantastic. After James showed me the photos, I knew that it … [Read more...]
