Ecotourism made easy

If you’re looking for a little more fulfilment from your tourism than holidays to Ibiza, the Greek Islands or any other major package destination can offer, then you’ve probably already considered ecotourism.

But just in case you don’t really know what this entails, or how to organise it, then here’s how to do it all with relative ease.

Firstly, ecotourism is a form of travel whereby you visit what are usually relatively fragile and undisturbed natural areas with a view to helping to preserve them and educate yourself a little into the bargain.

Additionally, your travel may help provide funds for conservation measures to directly benefit the locality in some way – whether that’s from an economic development perspective, or the local community – or directly in support of the environment you’re there to see and help.

The right forms of ecotourism will always focus on socially responsible travel and environmental sustainability – as well as your personal growth.

The problem lies in the time it takes to organise such tourism when we lead busy lives and want to experience different parts of the world, different cultures and diverse environments – all in limited time.

Thankfully, there are a number of organisations which fit neatly into this niche, doing the hard organizational work on our behalves while we do the hard work on the ground when we get there as part of the deal. A great resource is the Green Global Travel website.

For UK ecotourists, the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers, or BTCV, organizes eco-friendly conservation holidays and volunteering opportunities at some wonderful locations at home and abroad. From helping to create hiking trails in Iceland’s National Parks or coppicing in the UK – the BTCV has a wealth of opportunities to choose from to get you back to nature and have a great holiday at the same time. Each year, there are over 200 holidays to choose from; so what are you waiting for?
